Ladakh, Land of Picturesque Passes -1

I attended Landscape photography workshop at to Ladakh from 27th September to 2nd October this year.  I had strong desire to be in the mountain ranges of Himalayas at least once in my life time.  When Nikon School of photography announced ‘Advanced Landscape Photography workshop in Ladakh’ I grabbed the opportunity to visit the place.  Though I was meddling with the basics of DSLR I decided to join the group to travel through picturesque Ladakh and pick up few tips from some of the best photographers in India working with Nikon School.

About to land

Ladakh is a beautiful mountain city in Leh district of Jammu Kashmir state of India.  The majesty and beauty of Himalayan ranges here is better seen and enjoyed as words are worthless to describe it.  Leh can be reached by road via Leh-Manali highway or Srinagar-Leh highway.  The easiest way is to reach Leh is via air, flight from Delhi to Leh airport – Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport – named after Indian statesman and monk.  This is one of the highest commercial airports in the world and is under the surveillance of military.  The airport itself is worth seeing.  All the flights land and take off in the mornings and before noon.

We (me with my husband) reached Leh airport in the morning about 7 AM on 27th September. There were few more enthusiasts like me also landed along with us.   Nikon School people were ready with vehicle and we were taken to a hotel in Leh a couple of kilometres away from the airport.

A warm traditional welcome awaited us at the hotel.  We had a cup of coffee and were asked by mentors to take complete rest after having breakfast.  They asked strictly not to take bath and just lie down and not even to talk too much.  This is all to adjust to the high altitude where oxygen is less in air.  In fact, we were asked to take acetazolamide tab at least 6hrs before landing at airport in Leh to avoid high altitude sickness.  This tab was taken twice daily for three days or until we were adjusted to the altitude.

It was a wonderful visit.  I want to post some pictures taken at different places in Ladakh every week for a few weeks. Hope you all will like it.

Thank you for visiting my blog.
