Common Lime Butterfly

 

This (Papilio demoleous) is a widely distributed butterfly seen in many countries world over.  It has many names  lime, lemon, citrus butterfly as its common host is citrus plant.  Though it does not have a prominent tail on its wings it is also known as lime, dingy, chequered swallow tail.

The back ground color is black and it has irregular spots on its wings.  Hind wing has a red tornal spot with blue edging around it.

In some Asian countries it is a pest and invasive, its caterpillars destroying the leaves of cultivated citrus plants.  Because of its tolerance and adaption to different habitats it is distributed worldwide.  Though it is edible butterfly, it basks on flowers and tufts of grass with its wings wide open.  It relies on its quick flight.
